When you start college, does your GPA start off at 4.0?

I didn't have a traditional high school GPA because I dropped out and completed a home-based program, which didn’t calculate GPAs. As I’m about to start college, I’m curious about how GPAs work. Do you begin college with a 4.0 GPA that adjusts based on your grades? Or do you start with a 0 GPA that increases as you earn grades?

Well, when you first start, you have a clean slate, meaning you have no GPA. So, in a way, it is both a 4.0 and a 0. It’s a 0, because there are no grades listed; therefore, it is perfectly flawless as well, which in a sense, would be like having a 4.0 and you could have a 4.0, if you work at making an A in each class that you enroll in. It’s all in how you look at it!

Technically it doesn’t exist, but it does start at 0. The thing to remember is that it’s 0.0 at 0 credits so your GPA first semester will reflect your QPA. Your GPA every semester will be added into your QPA (quality point average or cumulative GPA).

It starts at nothing.

Your GPA calculation is (Grade points for each class added together)/(Total number of credits).

If you’ve taken no classes, you can’t have a GPA.

I believe it starts at 0. You have to earn units in order to earn a GPA.

It is basically nonexistent until your first final grade.
