c) SO2

all others have all electrons in bonds.

and e. is thus not correct.

A) bent shaped, polar molecule, all single bonds and two lone pair electrons on O. This will have no resonance.

B)This is an octahedral, nonpolar molecule, bond angles 90, all single bonds. This will have no resonance.

C) Trigonal planar molecule. bond angle is 120 (ideally), There is a lone pair of electrons on S, and there are two double bonds. This will exhibit resonance as the electrons forming the pi bond can change to the other locations, theres more, but it will be confusing to explain.

D) Nonpolar, tetrahedral, bond angles i believe are 120. This will not exhibit resonance

They key point is to draw the molecules and make sure all the electrons are in the proper atoms.

hi Becca: Resonance is feasible once you are able to write 2 or greater equivalent (Lewis) systems for a molecule that includes switching a double bond between bonds. subsequently ozone O3 has 2 resonance systems: O=O-O <=> O-O=O (molecule is in fact V shaped) Carbon disulphide would not have any resonance systems: there is basically one thank you to jot down S=C=S. think of C6H6! once you do greater progressed chem (as i'm hoping you will) you replace resonace systems with delocalized MOs. Cheers, dr p
