Why did workers form unions, and what were the main goals of union reformers?

I am seeking assistance with understanding the historical context behind the formation of labor unions. Specifically, I would like to know the reasons that motivated workers to organize into unions and the primary goals that union reformers aimed to achieve. Any insights or resources that can shed light on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Before there were unions workers got screwed over by companies. No minimum wage, no sick days, unfair hiring/firing techniques, etc. So workers joined unions because they were the only way to improve their situation

Unions were formed to be the spokespersons for the worker and the management or owners of the corporation. Working conditions, pay, hours worked, and contracts were the main topics to be discussed. If these talks broke down at contract time – a strike was the weapon the unions used. Sometimes the owners fought backs with a lockout or the hiring of scabs to cross the picket lines and take the workers jobs until a contract was hammered out.
