Phagocytosis involves extensions of the cell’s cytoplasm surrounding and engulfing large particles, also called “cell eating”. Since an organism with a cell wall would have the cell wall on the outside of the cell membrane, the cytoplasmic extensions and cell membrane would have to somehow go through the cell wall. Much more difficult since the cell wall is a rigid structure.
