Choose one of the themes mentioned in Uncle Tom’s Cabin and give two examples of how that theme has been used. Your response should

One of the themes in Uncle Tom’s Cabin is the conflict between the law and moral righteousness. One example of this theme is illustrated through the character of Mrs. Shelby. She treats her slaves almost like family, believing that this is the right thing to do, yet she still owns slaves. Despite her personal convictions, she allows her husband to sell Tom and Harry, even after promising Eliza that she would never do such a thing. Additionally, the law mandates that all citizens assist in capturing fugitive slaves, which contradicts their personal beliefs about the morality of slavery. This conflict is further exemplified by the character of Mr. Bird, a senator who has voted for the Fugitive Slave Act. However, when confronted with the reality of returning a slave to their owner, he chooses to act according to his conscience and helps Eliza and Harry in their quest for freedom.

One of the themes so far is the law versus what is right. One example of this is the character of Mrs. Shelby. She treats her slaves almost like family as she thinks that is the right thing to do, but she still owns slaves. She lets her husband sell Tom and Harry even though she promised Eliza that she would not ever do such a thing. In addition, the law states that all citizens must help capture fugitives slaves, even if the institution of slavery is against what they believe to be right. An example of this is the character of Mr. Bird. He is a senator who has voted for the Fugitive Slave act, but when faced with actually returning a slave to an owner, he does what he feels is right and helps Eliza and Harry in their bid for freedom.
