Do hamsters live in the wild?

My friend and I are curious about whether hamsters live in the wild. If they do, where can they be found, and on which continent do they primarily reside?

Yes, hamsters live in the wild. There are 3 distinct species of animal that are all referred to as hamsters: Cricetulus, Phodopus, and Mesocricetus.

The Russian Dwarf Hamster (Phodopus campbelli) are native to the steppes and semi-arid areas of central Asia, the Altay Mountains and northeastern China. This is probably the most common species you’ll find in a cage.

The Winter White Russian Dwarf Hamster (Phodopus sungorus) live in Siberia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia. Also known as Siberian Hamsters.

The Chinese Hamster (Cricetulus griseus) comes from the deserts of northern China and Mongolia.

The Roborovski Hamster (Phodopus roborovskii) can be found in the Gobi Desert, the desert steppe of Mongolia and in some parts of Northern China.

The Syrian Hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) comes from Syria, funnily enough.

Yes, they are wild, they will make a home with one big chamber and lots of tunnels going of to little food areas, unfortunately, I do not know where they live.

If I am not mistaken, I believe they are native to the south east asia area. Particularly Thailand.
