Do I need to restart my router to forward a port?

Do I need to restart my router after forwarding a port? Specifically, do I have to turn my router off and then back on again for the port to open, or does it open automatically once I configure it? I'm asking because restarting my router may change my IP address, which could cause issues since I'm running a gaming server on my computer. I am currently using an Actiontec router.

Most routers yes, a restart is needed. With my router, I have to restart it to start Port Forwarding, just try, and it should say if you have to restart or not. Since you have a dynamic IP address then your IP will most likely change if your router and modem are combined as one. You will just have to update your gaming server IP info.

Also, you should be able to pay your ISP a few extra bucks a month to get a Static IP

Hi,

Just try changing your computer to a static IP address.

Start > network places > view network connections > right click your "local area Connection" network connection and click "status".

Click support and take note of the IP, Subnet mask, and your default gateway. then click close

Right click the same icon and click "properties", then select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) from the list and click properties.

Click the buttno for "Use the following IP Address:

Fill in the 3 items to match what you found in the status box, then in the bottom put your preferred DNS server to the sameas your default gateway.

Your comptuer now has a static IP address.

If you are referring to your INTERNET Address changing, there is absolutely no way to stop this, BUT generally speaking resetting your "router" wont change it... resetting your "MODEM" will.
