How an action potential affects Ca2+ movement in a muscle cell?
How does an action potential affect Ca2+ movement in a muscle cell? I am trying to understand the sequence of events involved. Here’s what I have so far:
- Ca2+ diffuses into the myofibrils.
- Ca2+ diffuses out of the myofibrils.
- Ca2+ channels in the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) open.
- Ca2+ diffuses out of the SR.
- Ca2+ is pumped back into the SR.
- The cytosolic Ca2+ level rises.
- Ca2+ channels in the SR close.
- The cytosolic Ca2+ level drops.
- The action potential propagates down the T-tubule.
- The action potential is completed.
Can you help clarify this process? Thank you!

1. action potential propagates down t tubule
ca2+ channels in SR open
Ca2+ diffuses out of SR
cytosollic ca2+ level rises
ca2+ diffuses into myofibril
action potential completed
ca2+ channel in SR closed
ca2+ pumped into SR
cytosolic Ca2+ level drops
10. ca2+ diffuses out of myofibril
