How are jigsaw puzzles cut?

I often wonder how jigsaw puzzles are cut. As someone who puts together a few puzzles each month, I find this topic fascinating. In woodworking, we use the term "kerf" to describe the width of the blade used for cutting wood. When measuring a piece of wood, you have to "cut alongside the line" rather than "cut on the line," because doing the latter would throw off your measurements due to kerf.

However, a jigsaw puzzle requires highly precise cuts, which suggests that they must be either laser cut or press-cut. Both of these methods would help alleviate the kerf issue, ensuring a clean, even image on the puzzle pieces. It's clear that making puzzles "one piece at a time" wouldn’t be cost-effective or time-efficient.

As I proudly complete my 1000-piece Return of the Jedi puzzle, I can't help but be curious: how do manufacturers cut jigsaw puzzles without damaging the image?

For wooden jigsaw puzzles, other methods for cutting the pieces are used including computer controlled lasers.

Have always enjoyed spreading out all those individually cut pieces, and then fitting them together to create a completed image. Enjoy placing pieces for each new view you fit together.

They use a machine! In the old days though, they carved the wood in the shape of the puzzle pieces, carved the puzzle pieces, put the special paper on (for example, if it were an animal puzzle they’d be putting animal pieces on) and then taped the rest of it onto a piece of wood.
