The correctanswer is D) Dr. Lanyon is more sociable than Mr. Utterson. In the two descriptions of the men we can see how Mr. Utterson likes to bealone, every Sunday he enjoys his own company while reading a book by the fire,on the other hand,  Dr. Lanyon is muchmore energetic and sociable. He welcomes Mr. Utterson with both hands and seemsto be enjoying his presence.
The correct answer is that Dr. Lanyon is more sociable than Mr. Utterson. This is because Mr. Utterson is described as living alone and his manner is very sad because he is always alone. He doesn't enjoy going home to an empty house. Dr. Lanyon is loud, very outgoing, and seems genuinely happy to see other people. He keeps up with his appearance and you can tell that he enjoys the company of others.

Mr. Utterson is well liked by others, in spite of his flaws. In this excerpt, we learn about both Mr. Utterson and Mr. Hyde. Mr Utterson has several flaws. He rarely smiles. He is often embarrased and "backward in sentiment." However, despite these shortcomings, Mr. Utterson is liked by many people. On the other hand, Mr. Hyde is "detestable." Therefore, the difference is that, even though both characters are flawed, Mr. Utterson is often liked, unlike Mr. Hyde.

It's important to understand that characterization, in general, refers to the process by which a characters motivations and personality is revealed to the readers of a certain book. There are two forms of characterization the first one is direct and the second is indirect. In direct characterization, the author reveals character traits and qualities in an explicit way. But in indirect characterization, the author reveals elements of the character in a more implicit way that means that he portrait characteristics through dialogue, speech or action. It's also important to know that Mr. Utterson is the narrator of the novel, he is a middle-aged man, a lawyer and an old friend of Jekyll. With these ideas in mind the correct answer is "The author uses indirect characterization to show that Mr. Utterson is a concerned and caring friend." The character in this excerpt talks about some characteristics of Jekyll in the past, as we read it we can see an indirect characterization of how the character of Mr. Utterson think, by these facts we know that he is worried and he thinks that probably Jekyll is in bad ways because of his changes. He is constantly watching Jekyll and he detects changes so as a good friend he starts to observe him. He is a very rational character so the author doesn't talk about him as a deeply spiritual man. Also, he is not cruel or vengeful since he was a food friend of Jekyll. He is a judgmental person but this is not a direct characterization because the author doesn't mention the characteristics of Mr.Utterson personality in the excerpt we infer it by the way he talks in the excerpt.
