Resonator (Hot Dog) How do they work?

Hi, I don't have much knowledge about cars, but I was told that a resonator could make my car sound a bit meaner. However, when I looked them up, one site mentioned that they actually reduce sound. Can someone clarify whether a resonator replaces the muffler or is installed before or after it? Additionally, how does a resonator affect the sound of my car, and will it impact my performance? I have an SL/R LH Torana with a 202 red motor. Will I need to have a custom resonator made for my car, or can I use any resonator that fits my exhaust pipe?

a resonator is a glasspack muffler, it will make any car sound meaner as in a deeper tone if you just have that on it with no other mufflers, alot of newer cars have resonators with more mufflers but i have duel exhaust with glasspack resonators on my 454 and it sounds very deep and mean

a resonator is actually similar to a muffler. it cycles sound waves back at sound waves for a canceling effect. all of the ones that i have seen are between the cat and the muffler.
