Photosynthesis is the process by which plants take sunlight, carbon dioxide and water to produce more complex molecules such as glucose and oxygen. This process is carried out cellularly in the chloroplasts. Chloroplasts are formed by thylakoid membranes where pigments such as chlorophyll are found. Chlorophyll is the pigment that captures the photons of light and activates the entire photosynthetic system through the excitation of an electron.

Cells get nutrients from their environment, but where do those nutrients come from? Virtually all organic material on Earth has been produced by cells that convert energy from the Sun into energy-containing macromolecules. This process, called photosynthesis, is essential to the global carbon cycle and organisms that conduct photosynthesis represent the lowest level in most food chains

Photosynthetic cells contain special pigments that absorb light energy. ... In plants, photosynthesis takes place in chloroplasts, which contain the chlorophyll.Chloroplasts are surrounded by a double membrane and contain a third inner membrane, called thethylakoid membrane, that forms long folds within the organelle.
The chloroplast contains chlorophyll within its thylakoids, which absorbs light energy and gives chloroplasts its green color. Stacks of thylakoids are known as grana, which exist in the open space of the chloroplast known as the stroma.
