In 1978, a young girl named Mary Mattock gruesomely murdered her family with a hatchet and was subsequently locked away for life in Long Island’s notorious Kings Park Psychiatric Center. Ten years later, Mary escaped from the asylum, leaving a grisly wake of bodies and blood. She was eventually gunned down by the police outside the sanitarium walls. This incident gave rise to the legend of Mary Hatchet’s walking ghost and the mischievous night named in honor of her death, known as BLOOD NIGHT.
Is there any truth to this story? I searched for her name on Wikipedia and found nothing. Does anyone know if this is based on a real person or event? Thank you.

No. Her story is based upon another legend, that of Mary Hatchett, which is pieced together from various other legends. So pieces of her tale are wound in with a lot of urban legend, fantasy folklore, and scraps of truth.
From an interview with the director: “The concept for Blood Night stemmed from a few Long Island urban legends. One is the legend of Mary Hatchet, which says that a young girl murdered her parents with a hatchet and now her ghost roams the wooded roadside at night. She is seen in the nearby cemetery, spotted by cars, etc. And she is just a scary * ghost. The other is the legends that surround the now abandoned Kings Park Psychiatric Center. It is reportedly haunted by the souls of the patients that have died there. There are so many stories about inmate abuse, and mass graves, all sorts of crazy **. So I combined elements of both legends to come up with an awesome slasher story. There is actually a great documentary called Lost Suburbia about Mary Hatchet and about Kings Park Psych Center, you can check out the videos on our website at www.bloodnightmovie.com in the videos section. Very cool legends.”
