To protect them for predators, parasites, and germs
The correct answer is -C) Prevent the embryo from drying out.The amniotic egg of birds and  reptiles is surrounded by an outer, tough, and protective shell, which protects the egg from any damage, predators, pathogens, and drying out. The tough shell and extra embryonic membranes create a safe environment where an embryo can develop into a whole organism (with different organs like eyes ,ears, brain, kidney, heart). Thus, option C) is the right answer.

The correct answer is option C.Eggs with tough protective shells developed to prevent the embryo from drying out. The hard shell of the egg is made of calcium carbonate and it protects the embryo from predators and from drying out. The egg shell is porous which allows air and moisture to pass through its pores.

While observing the egg from the external one can witness shell, that is, a hard, protective covering formed of calcium carbonate. The shell is porous, and thus, it permits the transfer of gases via the shell. The moisture and carbon dioxide are given off via the pores and are substituted by atmospheric gases like oxygen.  The eggs with tough protective shells are developed to safeguard the egg from germs, parasites, and predators.
