The main functional group in sugars is the alcohol (-OH) group.

The main one in lipids is the ester (COOC) group.

The two major ones in proteins are amines (NH2) and acids (COOH).

proteins have peptide bonds between amino acids. The functional groups on the amino acid determine how the protein forms. In general hydrophilc groups get presented to the outside and hydrophobic to the inside.
