What does a computer operating system do?
Could you please provide me with three key functions of a computer operating system, specifically focusing on Windows? Thank you!

OS does these things-
1) To interact with your hardware including processor, hard disk, DVD drive, sound & multimedia.
2) OS create an environment with various layers to handle hardware, programs, data & user’s actions.
3) To create a “User Interface’ so human can interact with this system.
I think thats all.
The operating system (OS) of a computer (very basically put) makes it usable to humans.
The OS acts as an interface which translates human language into computer language, and helps you to understand what you are doing (for instance in a program) without BEING a programmer!
The OS also takes information that you put in (like from the keyboard and the mouse) and processes it to do what you want it to do.
Furthermore the operating system makes sure that your information is kept safe and in order between the processor the memory and the storage (hard disk) on your computer.
The basic functionality of operating systems remain the same, whether it is Windows, Linux or MAC.
This question would be much easier to answer if you had asked,
What does a computer operating system NOT do?
Well, it doesn’t brush your teeth, but it WILL make you gurgle if you don’t have it.
It won’t comb your hair but it will make you pull it out if you don’t have it
It won’t cure your headache but it will sure give you one if you don’t have it.
The OS does most of the bootup routine, like check the keyboard, check all drives, check RAM, check mouse, load the startup stuff (like the old Autoexec.bat file used to do in DOS (Disk Operating System) before Windows. etc., etc.
?
PS: Your comp will NOT work without an OS.
This Site Might Help You.
