That’s really not very funny. Most Jews I know don’t hate Christmas – they just don’t give a rat’s *** about it. The notion that Jews hate all things Christian has been cited as an excuse for pogroms, inquisitions, and genocide, so, if you get an unpleasant response from some people here, maybe that will help you understand why.

Now as to your question, no, I’m pretty sure Ebenezer Scrooge was not Jewish. First of all, if you go by Adam Sandler’s Chanukah song: “Some people think that Ebenezer Scrooge is. Well he’s not, but guess who is? All Three Stooges!” So let’s call that exhibit A.

Exhibit B, the goyishe name. “Scrooge” for sure isn’t a Jewish name. Now, if he was “Eliezer” instead of “Ebenezer,” maybe you’d be on to something…

And lastly, “Bah! Humbug!” — What’s that jargle? If a Jew wants to dismiss sometihng with contempt, he says “Feh!” not “Bah!”

So, there you have it. Ebenezer Scrooge: Not a Jew.

Now Shylock, THERE’S a Jew, written as only a gentile who had never met a Jew in his life (the Jews had been expelled from England in Shakespeare’s lifetime) could write one!

Actually, whether or not you meant it as a joke, it is a very distasteful comment.

The Jewish people have enough going on, they definitely don’t need comments or “jokes” like that.

So here is the answer to your question.

No, Scrooge was not jewish. His character is based on a member of the Puritan sect of early days. His work ethic is based on the Puritan laws that date back to the 1700’s.

Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1659 did in fact ban Christmas, imposing fines on whomever did not turn up for work on Christmas Day. The Puritan leader Increase Mather inveighed,

The generality of Christmas-keepers observe that festival after such a manner as is highly dishonorable to the name of Christ. How few are there comparatively that spend those holidays (as they are called) after a holy manner. But they are consumed in Compotations, in Interludes, in playing at Cards, in Revellings, in excess of Wine, in mad Mirth …

Puritan distaste for “Christmas spirit”, by the way, is why Dickens’ Scrooge bears the Christian name “Ebenezer”, an Old Testament reference that reveals a dissenting Protestant background, and the sort of Christian asceticism that would eschew Christmas.

Please be careful regarding your “jokes” next time.

Jews don’t hate Christmas, I know some reform jews who actually celebrate the birth of Jesus who was a JEW.

also, Jewish people aren’t the only ones who don’t celebrate Christmas.

as for scrooge I don’t think he was jewish.

You have a tasteless sense of humor.

Jewish people don’t hate Christmas. I don’t know where you got that from.

I hope you can come up with some better jokes in the future but in the mean time please spare us the pain of having to read your ridiculous “questions”.

MORE bad taste!

(Amazing how many questions that are theoretically “humorous” are in such bad taste, especially when asking about Chanukah! Why is this, I wonder?)
