Thatâs really not very funny. Most Jews I know donât hate Christmas â they just donât give a ratâs *** about it. The notion that Jews hate all things Christian has been cited as an excuse for pogroms, inquisitions, and genocide, so, if you get an unpleasant response from some people here, maybe that will help you understand why.
Now as to your question, no, Iâm pretty sure Ebenezer Scrooge was not Jewish. First of all, if you go by Adam Sandlerâs Chanukah song: âSome people think that Ebenezer Scrooge is. Well heâs not, but guess who is? All Three Stooges!â So letâs call that exhibit A.
Exhibit B, the goyishe name. âScroogeâ for sure isnât a Jewish name. Now, if he was âEliezerâ instead of âEbenezer,â maybe youâd be on to somethingâ¦
And lastly, âBah! Humbug!â â Whatâs that jargle? If a Jew wants to dismiss sometihng with contempt, he says âFeh!â not âBah!â
So, there you have it. Ebenezer Scrooge: Not a Jew.
Now Shylock, THEREâS a Jew, written as only a gentile who had never met a Jew in his life (the Jews had been expelled from England in Shakespeareâs lifetime) could write one!

Actually, whether or not you meant it as a joke, it is a very distasteful comment.
The Jewish people have enough going on, they definitely donât need comments or âjokesâ like that.
So here is the answer to your question.
No, Scrooge was not jewish. His character is based on a member of the Puritan sect of early days. His work ethic is based on the Puritan laws that date back to the 1700âs.
Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1659 did in fact ban Christmas, imposing fines on whomever did not turn up for work on Christmas Day. The Puritan leader Increase Mather inveighed,
The generality of Christmas-keepers observe that festival after such a manner as is highly dishonorable to the name of Christ. How few are there comparatively that spend those holidays (as they are called) after a holy manner. But they are consumed in Compotations, in Interludes, in playing at Cards, in Revellings, in excess of Wine, in mad Mirth â¦
Puritan distaste for âChristmas spiritâ, by the way, is why Dickensâ Scrooge bears the Christian name âEbenezerâ, an Old Testament reference that reveals a dissenting Protestant background, and the sort of Christian asceticism that would eschew Christmas.
Please be careful regarding your âjokesâ next time.
Ebinezer Scrooge-sounds like a goy name to me. Oh and what part was funny-i didnât laugh-and you r certainly uneducated and unoriginal.

You have a tasteless sense of humor.
Jewish people donât hate Christmas. I donât know where you got that from.
I hope you can come up with some better jokes in the future but in the mean time please spare us the pain of having to read your ridiculous âquestionsâ.
MORE bad taste!
(Amazing how many questions that are theoretically âhumorousâ are in such bad taste, especially when asking about Chanukah! Why is this, I wonder?)
