What is the glossy clear finish, often applied to various materials, called? The name starts with the letter "L" and ends with the letter "r".

People use terms for clear finishes quite loosely and many times not correctly, so be sure to get a clear finish that will work for the material and purpose you want. If you want a word that relates to them all, use clear “finish” or “varnish.”
For example, “lacquer” can be used as a verb loosely just to mean adding a clear coat to something, but as a noun lacquer means particular types of clear varnish/finish that won’t work well on everything for every purpose, etc.
Check out the types of “varnish” on this page to see which works on what, and with what characteristics:

And this page deals just with “lacquer”: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lacquer
(Clear polyurethanes are often used for finishes/varnishes on many materials and for many purposes, and are really tough, etc.)
