Upper case are capitol letters like ABC and so on. Lower case are the smaller letter like abc and so on. The name comes from the day of hand set type when the letters were kept in drawers know as cases. The drawers on the top had the capitol letters and the drawers on the bottom had the smaller letters.

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ those where capital letters. Lowercase are abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz. You can get that on a computer by holding shift down and pressing a letter or you can hit the caps Lock but that keeps you on uppercase letters until you press it again
